The death of Tim Chavez, UCO class of ‘81, stilled the voice of a writer and editor whose career began at The Vista in the late 1970s.
It was my privilege, as the paper’s faculty adviser, to witness the unfolding of a talent that truly made a difference in the world. Tim’s obituary in The Tennessean, Nashville’s daily paper, described him as a “passionate journalist.” He had spent a decade in Nashville, and many say his columns and editorials changed the culture of that city and even of that state. Earlier he had worked on papers in his home state of Oklahoma and in New York. Wherever Tim worked, first on the UCO campus and later in the professional world, he was fearless in attacking wrong when he saw it and in serving as a mouthpiece for the poor, the disadvantaged, the discrimination victims and those who had no voice in society. Cancer claimed hm at 50. He did more in his short life than many do in a long lifetime. His influence will live on. Tim and I had remained close friends, and my sense of personal loss is profound. Rest in peace, Tim. Dennie Hall, UCO Journalism Professor Emeritus and Vista Advisor Editors’ Note: Tim Chavez died on Thursday, June 18 of leukemia in Tennessee..
