World-renowned speaker and former porn addict Michael Leahy will bring his critically acclaimed presentation "Porn Nation: The Naked Truth" to UCO on Monday, Feb. 25, at 8:30 p.m.
The 90-minute multimedia based presentation will take place inside the Nigh University center ballrooms located on the third floor with a question and answer session to follow.
The presentation will feature captivating video clips and interviews with different experts and everyday people who share their personal struggles with out-of-control sexual behaviors. It will also incorporate various music, movies, and advertising while looking at the impact living in a hypersexual culture is having on today's college student according to a press release from Leahy.
"Porn is now the norm in our culture, and no one understands that better than today's college students," Leahy said. "From the rapid rise of cyber porn addiction among male and female college students to its role in influencing the high incidence of rapes and prevalence of eating disorders among college co-eds, the growing influence of porn in the midst of an already sexually charged campus culture is taking a very real toll on students' lives."
The program is far more than just an expose about the sex industry. The program will also integrate Leahy's story as a recovering sex addict providing credible insight into our "sex-saturated society."
Leahy is an author, speaker and the Executive Director of BraveHearts LLC, an Atlanta-based organization he founded in 2001.
BraveHearts' mission is to help students build lives of sexual integrity while encouraging healthy relationships free from sexual compulsion and addiction, the release said.
Leahy said he was first exposed to pornography at the age of 11. He feels the media is providing the 12 to 25-year-old demographic with copious amounts of pornographic messages and imagery.
"All of us are sexual creatures and this is what happens when you are immersed in this kind of exposure," Leahy said.
His message has been featured and discussed on popular news and talk shows like ABC's "20/20" and "The View," as well as local NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox News affiliates while touring college campuses across the U.S. and Canada.
Most recently, Leahy was featured in USA Today talking about how the advances in mobile technology and wireless devices are making it much easier for people to view pornography at work.
The pornography industry is one of the world's highest grossing industries. Leahy said the porn industry releases roughly 11,000 new titles a year while Hollywood produces between 400-500 films in the same span.
According to the Web site Toptenreviews.com, the U.S. pornography industry is one of the world's biggest businesses. It grossed a combine $26 billion in 2005 and 2006, Exceeding the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC during the same period.
While hearing the presentation students are challenged to consider the "bigger questions" about porn that nobody's asking:
"How is my exposure to porn and our hypersexual media affecting me and my relationships?"
