Britain’s Got Talent? No Way!

Because reality TV knows no bounds, Britain’s Got Talent is coming into the spotlight worldwide. This show is another show in a long slew of reality talent competitions. Apparently we must have a version for every country now.
Britain’s Got Talent features much of the same crazy and exotic stuff the American version did, but they also have one other thing going for them—talented contestants. Well, at least there is one amazing contestant.
Susan Boyle has become an overnight celebrity (much like Kim Kardashian did but without the sex tape). She looks—what’s a kind way to say this—frumpy. She is your typical, little old sweet grandma type. You would never expect her to singing to sound as heavenly as it does.
Britain’s Got Talent does their auditions in front of an audience, and when she walked out and explained she has always dreamed of being a singer, the audience started to snicker.
I will have to admit, if I had not known before I watched it that she would sound the way she did, I would have been blown away. Once she opened her mouth the audience’s jaws dropped. They actually gave her a standing ovation.
The judges were equally impressed. The judging panel is made of Piers Morgan (you might know him from season one of The Celebrity Apprentice), Amanda Holden (she is the British version of Paula Abdul), and none other than Simon Cowell.
The judges gave her three yeses. I was kind of sad that she didn’t get her golden ticket to Hollywood and then jump up and down and hug Ryan Seacrest. I wonder why he is not on this show; he is on every other show ever made.
Susan Boyle is still in the competition, but it is being reported that Simon Cowell is already singing her to his record label. Even if she does not win, I’m sure she won’t fade into obscurity too quickly. The market for opera music is not too big, but I’m sure she can hold her own for a while.
This show has made me realize how many clone shows like this are actually out there. America’s Got Talent, American Idol, Pop Idol, Australian Idol, World Idol—they all follow the same basic format. My question is, where do they find that many washed up “Paula-esque” hacks to fill the chairs?
