Reality Recap
Tired of wading through countless hours on your TiVo just to get to the good part of your favorite reality shows? Maybe I can help. Reality Recap will bring you all the highlights—and lowlights—of the reality shows on your must watch list.
My name is Austin Melton and I’m a correspondent for the UCO Vista. Growing up in the “MTV generation”, I have been exposed to entirely too much reality TV. Now I can’t get enough of it—and all things Hollywood for that matter.

Sorry Nick, There is Someone Else
2/26/09 9:23 PM
So I was wrong…Nick Mitchell did not make it into the top 12 on American Idol. Even with the Votefortheworst.com behind him, Nick just couldn’t get enough votes to make it through. Nick belted out a campy performance of “And I’m telling you, I’m not going”—if only that were true. It was his comedy and personality he put into the song that made wade through an hour of other performances just to see him. Complete with, as Ryan Seacrest put it, “getting to second base with [the] logo”, Nick bounced around the stage and revitalized an otherwise mundane night. This week was not a complete wash, however. For once I agree with Randy Jackson when he said that sixteen year old Allison Iraheta “blew it out da box”. She rocked...This One’s too Crazy, This One’s too Lazy, but This One’s Just Right

I must admit when I heard Idol was planning to add a fourth judge this season, I was a little apprehensive. Kara DioGuardi has not only proven herself, but has reinvented American Idol and perhaps saved it from the inevitable ratings slide. I was not sure how she would fit into the delicate balance at the judging table. I thought, what more could we want? We have the incomprehensible ranting of Paula Abdul, the broken record advice of Randy Jackson, and the snide bitching of Simon Cowell—not that I don’t love Simon’s bitching. Kara adds a new touch…she brings actual, intelligent advice to the contestants. She fits in nicely on the panel—perhaps too nicely. She is the perfect balance between the harshness of Simon and the babying of...Fired? I can’t be fired. Do you know who I am?

Well the answer to that question is no when we are talking about The Celebrity Apprentice 2. NBC recently announced that they are picking up The Apprentice for its eighth season. Reportedly they have been receiving calls from high profile celebrities wanting to participate in another celebrity version apprentice. Doing this show must count as their court mandated community service? I guess the unemployment rate is effecting even the most “high profile” of stars. With “huge” names such as Tom Green and Khloe Kardashian rounding out this seasons roster, it makes you wonder if they are even playing for charity at all. If I wanted to see over privileged people whine because they did not get their way…I would go to work. I’m eager to see if Donald Trump...The Biggest Loser, Ain’t That the Truth
2/24/09 4:46 PM
When The Biggest Loser premiered in 2004, I have to admit that I watched it religiously. At the time I was struggling with my own weight issues and this show was a motivator. I lost track of this show for a few years and now that I’ve started tuning in again (in between episodes of American Idol of course), I can tell that this show has lost something all right—its morality. Back when I first watched it, the show was cutting edge. While hosted by comedian Caroline Rhea the show worked thanks in large part to her charming wit and self-deprecating sense of humor. Rhea suffered from her own struggle with weight and her genuine desire for the contestants to succeed was evident. Now the show has been turned into a three-ring circus with morbidly obese people as the main...A Lesson to be Learned from Wife Swap
2/24/09 4:42 PM
I have to hand it to Wife Swap this season for providing one of the most solid performing reality shows of the 2008-2009 season. It never fails to deliver the perfect amount of awkward tension between the two families—and buried deep under all the hilarious quirks of each family is a positive message. For those of you not familiar with ABC’s Wife Swap, it is a reality show that chronicles the adventure of two polar opposite families switching wives/mothers for two weeks. For the first week, the visiting wife has to live by the rules of the host family. By the second week, the “rules change” ceremony takes place and the host family then lives by the rules of the visiting wife. Simple premise—yes. It is a simple concept, but perhaps that’s what...Kathy Griffin—Not so D List Anymore
2/19/09 9:54 PM
Kathy Griffin has announced that her Emmy award winning Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List will continue to be broadcast on Bravo for its fifth season. I’m sure Bravo executives are breathing a sigh of relief because long time Bravo staple—Project Runway—announced plans to depart to Lifetime. For those of you not familiar with My Life on the D List, it follows comedian Kathy Griffin as she struggles with the real side of show business. It’s not all glitz and glam after all—shame on In Touch Weekly for making me think otherwise. Armed with her tour manager and two assistants, Kathy takes on Hollywood one gig at a time. We follow Kathy Griffin as she attempts to sell out shows, book publicity tours, and deal with the annoying,...And the Winner of American Idol Season 8 is…

A little early to make predictions I know, but since my favorite contestant in the top 36 has been disqualified, I guess I will find a new contestant to pledge my allegiance to. Joanna Pacitti has been disqualified from Americana Idol this week . Fox executives are saying she had personal relationships with high ranking staff on Idol which makes her ineligible to continue. You might remember Joanna. She has had record deals before—even going as far to provide a song for the 2001 movie Legally Blonde. Her single Watch Me Shine was prominently featured on the movie’s soundtrack. The song it’s self is great but ended up dying from a lack of promotion. I am actually surprised that she made it as far as she did on Idol. She had less than spectacular performances during...Soup—Good For a Diet Low in Reality TV
2/17/09 4:42 PM
If you are like most people and you don’t have the time to sift through hours and hours of reality TV to get to the good part, then The Soup on E is for you. As E’s revamped version of long time network staple Talk Soup, The Soup delivers a the best moments from a week’s worth of daytime and reality TV. The show can attribute much of its success to the deadpan comedic style of host Joel McHale. Along with the rest of his crew, McHale makes fun of the outrageous happenings on shows such as The Hills, The View, I love New York, The Bad Girls Club, and The Tyra Banks Show—however nobody is safe from the sarcastic wit of McHale. Even though this show is not technically reality TV, it does provide the most comprehensive recap among all similar shows. In...
